“This painting explains how life itself guides us. How small influences of light, whether it’s through experiences, motivations, or the beauty of surviving life’s challenges, can provide us with a sense of security to move forward. The artist chose his son for this painting as he watched him interact with life. In youth, we don’t need much light to progress through life; every small experience becomes a purpose to move and develop. In this painting, the artist’s son is letting a firefly’s light guide him through the darkness around him. His expression shows uncertainty, but his stance shows determination in what lies ahead. His attire represents protection against the elements he encounters, and his surroundings show that he is alone on this journey. His backpack represents his preparations for his journey. The firefly is not trapped or enclosed in this painting. I feel the artist did this to show that we don’t have to control our light; it’s there to guide us, not to be imprisoned by us. If we show more trust in life and the light it gives, it will give us more opportunities for new experiences. No matter how dark our surroundings are, the light that we have will be enough to guide us.”
